  • Retinal Vein Occlusions:

Retinal Vein Occlusions are divided in to Branch Retinal Vein Occlusions (“BRVO,” part of the retina) and Central Retinal Vein Occlusions (“CRVO,” all retinal veins affected). When this happens, there is slowed or temporarily-stopped blood flow in the retinal veins. As a result, the retinal cells do not get enough oxygen, blood and clearance, so they are damaged. Swelling in the central vision, “macular edema,” may occur which can lead to loss of vision. Other important complications include the growth of new blood vessels on the surface of the retina and in the vitreous gel. These can lead to bleeding and retinal detachments that can devastate vision. Eye pressures can also soar as a result. All of these complications can lead to vision loss.

Symptoms of BRVO or CRVO are usually loss of vision. Sometimes floaters are the presenting symptom, and are due to bleeding in the eye.

Early monitoring and treatment of this condition is critical to maintaining and regaining optimal vision. Along with treatment to the eye (injection of medication, lasers and surgery - depending on the specific situation), control of blood pressure is critical – it is the leading associative cause of vein occlusions. Other systemic conditions will be considered as well, and worked up if appropriate.

Dr. Ezon will tailor a treatment plan for each patient with a retinal vein occlusion. Some patients do not need treatment, but most will need injections. Dr. Ezon and the staff at Jersey Shore Retina Consultants, LLC will do everything possible to make your experience as pleasant ass possible.
