  • Vitreomacular Traction:

In Vitreomacular Traction Syndrome the vitreous gel is very firmly attached to the central retina (the macula) and with time it tugs on the macula. This causes distortion of the retinal contour and disrupts the normal communication between the cells and layers of the macula. As a result, vision can be decreased.

Treatment ofVMT is recommended when the patient is sufficiently bothered by the limit to vision or by metamorphopsia (distorted images). In limited cases, a gas bubble can be injected in the office, followed by positioning instructions over the next few days. Usually, however, a surgery called “vitrectomy” is required to treat a VMT. Anatomic success after surgery is very high (95-99%), with a degree of visual improvement in the majority of patients.

Dr. Ezon is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship trained retina specialist who treats VMT and a full array of retinal conditions.
