This procedure is a method of treating retinal detachments in the office. Depending on your situation, you may not need any further intervention, but in other instance it is utilized as a temporizing procedure until an operating room procedure can be performed. It involves numbing the eye, injecting a small bubble of gas into the eye, and applying laser or cryotherapy to the retinal tears. The gas bubble will expand during the first three days, then slowly resolve. Head positioning is very important with a pneumatic retinopexy.
In addition to potentially avoiding the operating room, according to many studies pneumatic retinopexy has the best visual outcomes for the right patients, when compared to other methods of treating retinal detachments.
If you have a retinal detachment, Dr. Ezon will speak with you about a pneumatic retinopexy if you are a candidate for this treatment.
