A tear in the retina usually happens when the vitreous gel tugs on the retina and lifts up a flap. This process can give the symptoms of flashing lights in the peripheral vision, the sensation of streaks of lighting, or visualization of floating spots or lines. The biggest concern about having a retinal tear is the risk of progression to retinal detachment and vision loss. Patients with symptoms of flashers and/or floaters should be promptly evaluated. If a retinal tear is identified, this will usually be treated with laser retinopexy to the retina in the area of the teat. This in-office procedure lays a barricade around the tear, sectioning it off from the remaining healthy retina, and decreasing your risk for retinal detachment to near-average.
Dr. Ezon has performed countless laser procedures for retinal tears and can address your issues in-office same-day.
