Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed surgeries in the United States. It is generally a very safe procedure due to the extensive training and experience cataract surgeons must go through. Nonetheless, there are potential complications mostly due to the underlying conditions of the surgical eye (for example: prior trauma, pseudoexfoliation, advanced cataract). Sometimes a piece of the lens migrates toward the back of the eye, into the “vitreous cavity.” Depending on the size and type of piece that moves to the back, this can be monitored closely or may need “vitrectomy” surgery with removal of the retained lens piece.
If you have retained posterior lens material after cataract surgery, your cataract surgeon should refer you for specialized evaluation by a retinal surgeon. Dr. Ezon is a fellowship-trained surgeon available for urgent management of retained lens material.
